  1. Hiya Porterhouseman

That’s a fantastic list, much appreciated. I noticed a few omissions as follows:

    17/11/78 - Lurkers, Whizz Kids
    02/03/79 - 999, Pinpoint
09/03/79 - Undertones, Squares (great night)
30/03/79 - Punishment of Luxury, Bitch
    10/08/79 - Slaughter & the Dogs
    21/09/79 - Chelsea
02/11/79 - Slaughter & the Dogs (not Gang of Four)
    25/01/80 - Vibrators
    15/02/80 - 999, Pinpoint
    11/03/80 - Cockney Rejects
    31/10/80 - Fad Gadget

And I’m pretty sure that 23 Skidoo only played the once in 1982 but not sure on which date, I’ll try and find out.

The Porterhouse was a great little club and I saw many of those bands on your list. Thanks for posting such a wonderful list.

  4. Well done Porthouseman, you have stirred up some very fond memories!
I attended many of the gigs in your list and also DJ'd some of them. There are a few other gigs that spring to mind that are not mentioned, Wall of Voodoo from 82, Wasted Youth (a couple of times I think), Naked Lunch. I also recall Stevo (owner of Some Bizarre label who used to insist on a DJ set with his distorted cacophony of sound destroying that made our ears bleed and the PA melt.

Upstairs at the Porterhouse was a wonderful sleazy unpredictable place to be in its heyday - long may it be remembered!

  5. My band Freeloader (later known as Rough Justice) played support to Tobruk there at the back end of '82. It was after July 82 as we were supposed to support Marillion that night but when we turned up the band had apparently refused to allow us to move their kit .

  11. Well done. However I can't see one of the biggest names ever who appeared at the Porterhouse. Jimi Hendrix's bass player Noel Redding appeared there somewhere between 1979-81. They were the Noel Redding Band. Also one of the best guitarists ever was Eric Bell (Thin Lizzy's whisky in the jar guitarist) under the name of the Eric Bell Band. I saw Randy California there who came back to my flat and dedicated the set to me (all on tape somewhere, he played with Jimi in the early days)). Randy California was the guitarist of Spirit. I think they have put White Spirit down here from June 21st, 1985. What about the amazing hard rock band Stray. I can't see any of these here, I seemed to remeber Sassafras as well.

Seem to remember the semi's and final were sold from a video shop opposite/near TESCO? I have been trying to track copies down for years now. I did contact someone who was friends with the guitarist from the three piece from Beckingham (name escapes me at the mo'... The Inclyned maybe?) who finished second (I think... or was that you?) who had a copy but never heard back. Surely someone has a copy in Worksop?? I seem to remember another Worksop site which had a lot of your stuff on (including, ahem, 'Dogs of War') but it seems to have disappeared around 2/3 years ago.Anyways, good to see you're still around and I'll pass this on to Greg next time I see him. 35. Back in the day I played drums in Glass Arcade and 'sang' in 10,000 Rats with Bubonic Plague and kept a bit of a diary for 1986 (only) and dates I have in there are:
    18/01/86 Angels Death Song
    15/03/86 Into a Circle + Glass Arcade
29/03/86 Psycho Surgeons + Glass Arcade + Mickey Mouth
    28/06/86 Chatshow + Glass Arcade
    25/07/86 Into a Circle + Glass Arcade
01/08/86 The Meteors + 10,000 Rats with Bubonic Plague
    12/09/86 Toy Dolls
    11/10/86 Wild Flowers
24/10/86 Fields of the Nephilim + Glass Arcade
28/11/86 Dig Vis Drill, Henry Normal, Screaming Trees
20/12/86 Glass Arcade (Headlining for once!)
30/03/87 Chiefs of Relief (that was the weekend of my 21st and I nearly ended up scrapping with ex-Sex pistol Paul Cook, who was drumming with them, upstairs in the glamorous dressing room. Right laff!)
I remember seeing the Macc Lads a couple of times (with 10,000 Rats supporting on one duff occasion) and Toy Dolls again but that must've been '87. Also around that time, International Rescue, Play Dead, Glitter Band (surprisingly good), Head and so many others that also escape me.
We were very lucky to have this place I always thought. Fuck London.
I started going around 1980 (aged 14). I remember Wednesday nights were a regular mod/ska type lark - £1 to get in if I remember rightly! No idea of dates but in '80-'81 I saw Bad Manners (more than once), The Bodysnatchers, The Gangsters, The Mo-Dettes, Weapon of Peace, The Lambrettas, The Purple Hearts, The Chords (I think) and many more that the bitch of time has swept away from my falling memory.
'83-'84 was very Psychobilly based. What a fab time I had, I loved and love that stuff, silly as it is. Again, no dates but I remember seeing The Meteors lots of times, the Guana Batz seemed to play every other week, King Kurt, The Stingrays, The Highliners a couple of times (great fun), Playn Jayne (or summat) also played.
That's about all I can remember for now. Some of the best nights of my naughty little life. Very missed.

    1. Yes, seen this before, I updated bits of it myself a few years ago, it's out of date again! I believe Gary is STILL working at Rock City of a weekend, that's got a real 'Purgatory' vibe to it I reckon... I may even have his number somewhere. I've no vids from the GA days, if I'm not mis-shapen I borrowed Greg my copy from the final and never saw it again! Dun't really matter though does it? Be fun to see it again though I must say. Tell you what, I'll be eternally grateful for that tape you did me in '86 - 'A new clear vision - never look at the sun' with all that 60's garage/psychedelic tackle on it. I transferred it to CD and still give it a go in the car to this day, very influential. You had the coolest record collection I always thought. Bet we could swap some gems nowadays. 2. Hi Tim... great you picked up the message. Agree on the privacy/paranoia! No offence to the site but.....We do come 'oop north' fairly regularly (yep.. we moved!!) so I'll contact you through here when we have the next visit planned. Re the 'final video', as far as I know Greg doesn't have it, I have asked him on a few occasions. Re the ADS/GA family tree, I've sent what I remember to the site some time ago (including info back to T.Beureux days) but it doesn't appear to have been updated for some time... hey ho!! Glad the tape/CD still resonates. The collection now numbers around 1800 EACH of singles and albums (vinyl, natch) with plenty more garage/psych!!! I even ran a radio show down here for around 5/6 years drawing entirely on my collection (no downloads here, mate) and have a few shows on CD. I'll run a couple of shows of for you to listen to when we come up. Oh, and Gary STILL at RC!!! Jeez, must be great pay, and free gigs too!!!Wish I had known he was there when we saw P J Harvey and others there a few years ago. I could have asked him about the P-House videos. Someone must/may have them surely. I know the Soft Cell gigs are out on the net so there is hope maybe?? I'm presuming you don't know where Greg now resides? If not, I'll fill you in when we speak/meet. And Gillo???

  39. Hi George... let's see 'em please!!! Seem to remember either G/A or 10000 Rats doing 'Leather Jackets' at a pub opposite the Regal?? Tim/Hydroman… any comments?? And Gillo??????

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hmm, not sure about that Alan. The pub was the Frog & Nightgown (RIP), I don't think GA ever played there (could be wrong!) but 10,000 Rats did a couple of times, I've no recollection of anyone but IR doing that song though. I still keep in touch with the singer and guitarist of IR and go up to Brid a couple of times a year for funtimes and a trip on the Yorkshire Belle. Top banana.
I still keep in touch with Gillo though sadly not enough. Great friend. We carried on playing together throughout the 90s, for a while just the two of us. We really knuckled down and went on an intense Frank Zappa trip in my cellar for a few years. We both maintain it was during this period that we both actually learned to play. We had our first jam in about 20 years a few weeks ago and had a hoot royale. I hope we do it again real soon. I'm currently working with another bass player and getting some nutty gigs in. Anything goes out there nowadays. It's just drums and bass but he's got a rack of pedals and more than makes up for the lack of some 'fwiddly-fwiddly' lead guitarist gurning like a used onion and making me yawn.
I've got some pics from the GA days, a couple of the Rats. Nobody used to really bother that much with cameras back then but I've got some nice monotone ones that this real nice kid did for us, if I remember rightly he never wanted any money either, did blow-ups and all sorts. Top lad, his name escapes me. They're from a gig at the Ship in '86 when GA and Rats played and there's some from the battle o' bands thing. You may have 'em already.
Nice to e-hear from you George, I'll let him know about it when I next see him!
    That is all for now.

  46. Certainly did! Bassetlaws finest, Glass Arcade blew them off the stage... seriously!! FotN were great in the warm up, the guitarist sounding like Hendrix, but come the actual gig they were very ordinary. I seem to remember their manager coming in to talk to the band afterwards and, like several others, wondering why the band were unsigned but..... Oh well! I'm sure Greg's songs would have translated well with a proper engineer and producer but it wasn't to be. I could be accused of bias but, after attending gigs for over 55 years I've seen the best (and worst) and GA were of a professional standard musically and had brilliant, innovative lyrics. In all their gigs with 'professional' bands they were NEVER outclassed.

Political post-punk and psychobilly who'd a thunk it,outside some of them got lippy they didn't know we were all 70's punks and could look after ourselves so we sent them scarperingacross a car park with some lumps and bumps, something always happened at Porterhouse great times.
